Thursday night, Nov 9, the Fellowship of Christian Athletes club hosted a special guest, Dámaso Marte, during their normal meeting time of 9 p.m. These meetings bring athletes together from many teams on campus. They talk about how to best combine Christianity with their sport so they can return to their teams and share what they have learned.

Last week, retired baseball World Series champion Dámaso Marte visited to share his testimony. Dámaso Marte has two World Series championships. One was with the Chicago White Sox (2005) and the other with the New York Yankees (2009). Because Marte is a Spanish speaker, a translator was present to allow non-Spanish speakers the ability to understand what he had to say.

“It reminded me of home,” freshman softball pitcher Modene Watie stated. “I go to a Spanish church… so it was nice to hear a Spanish sermon.”

JD Valle, a regular attendee to FCA and a baseball first and third baseman at Sterling College, said he had known Marte for almost six years before seeing him at Thursday’s meeting. His father being a preacher created that opportunity.

“[Marte] has been through a lot of stuff in his life. For example, leaving your country to follow your dreams here in the United States,” said Valle. Valle was born in Puerto Rico and moved to the U.S. in 2014. “You always need to trust God, no matter the situation.”

“[Marte] got all the money that he wanted. He could buy everything, every vehicle, every house, but still, he feels empty in his life. He hadn’t found that peace in his life until he had that personal encounter with Jesus, so that was the most surprising thing from his testimony. No matter if you have money or if you have everything in the world, if you don’t have Jesus you don’t have peace,” Valle explained.
