On Friday, April 20, 2018, at Honors Convocation, Preston Patton, from Augusta, Kansas, a football player from Sterling College, received two scholarship awards: The Maxine Robinson Endowed Scholarship & The Kenneth and Virginia Fischer Memorial Scholarship. One of the scholarships he applied for online and was expecting to receive it, but the other he was not anticipating.

Patton stated, “I only had to apply for one, but I don’t know where the other one came from, but I’m not complaining. I’m not complaining, I’ll take it!” Preston was selected from many students in the education department.

During the event, Patton said he was not really expected to win those scholarships because he’d already filled out so many scholarship forms online and had never gotten one before. When they called his name out has the recipient of those two awards, he lit up like a Christmas tree

“When I heard my name called,” explained Patton, “I was just like, oh my God, I was in shock.” He also said it wasn’t luck that won him the awards, but he put in a lot of hard work in order to receive the awards.

Patton said, “I had received an email to fill out an application and then turned that in to the education department.”

One of the questions on the application asked about his work ethic, and his plans for the future.

The application was not difficult according to Patton, “it was just simple questions I had to answer.”

The scholarships are not ones he gets to keep throughout the four years of college, but he has to apply for them again after the next year.
