Students will be able to wear their Sterling pride with a new look this fall as sophomore psychology major Patty Davila won the 2018 Sterling College Homecoming T-shirt contest.

Every year, the Sterling College Student Government Association conducts a contest for students to design a T-shirt for the college’s homecoming weekend. This year’s prize, beyond having homecoming participants wear the design around, was a $10 gift card to the Sterling College Bookstore.

Davila, who minors in art and design, said winning the contest surprised her.

“I did not expect to win it at all,” she said. “It’s nice to be on campus and people know who you are. Like when they come up to me and say, ‘Oh, Patty, congratulations! You did such a good job!’”

The voting process for the contest was conducted by SGA through an online survey that was open to Sterling College students and faculty members. However, there were some technical difficulties when it came to the survey.

Student Life staff member Tess Canon oversaw the survey process, and she received dozens of emails regarding the glitches.

“I sent like eight emails out,” she said. “At first, it was the link in the email that was broken. Then it was the server for the survey that crashed. It was just one thing after another. Next time, we won’t use the free survey website first. We’ll use the better, expensive one.”

Sterling College Homecoming is scheduled for Oct. 4-6. Some of the weekend’s events include a home football game and a musical production of “Big Fish” from the Sterling College Theatre Department.
